The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic01:25

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

7.3K
In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the...

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

709
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Relative Motion Analysis using Rotating Axes-Problem Solving

421
Consider a crane whose telescopic boom rotates with an angular velocity of 0.04 rad/s and angular acceleration of 0.02 rad/s2. Along with the rotation, the boom also extends linearly with a uniform speed of 5 m/s. The extension of the boom is measured at point D, which is measured with respect to the fixed point C on the other end of the boom. For the given instant, the distance between points C and D is 60 meters.
Here, in order to determine the magnitude of velocity and acceleration for point...

Relative Motion Analysis using Rotating Axes

486
Consider a component AB undergoing a linear motion. Along with a linear motion, point B also rotates around point A. To comprehend this complex movement, position vectors for both points A and B are established using a stationary reference frame.
However, to express the relative position of point B relative to point A, an additional frame of reference, denoted as x'y', is necessary. This additional frame not only translates but also rotates relative to the fixed frame, making it...

Functional Classification of Joints

4.2K
Functional Classification of Joints
The functional classification of joints is determined by the amount of mobility between the adjacent bones. Joints are functionally classified as a synarthrosis or immobile joint, an amphiarthrosis or slightly moveable joint, or as a diarthrosis, a freely moveable joint. Fibrous and cartilaginous joints can be functionally classified as either synarthroses  or amphiarthroses, whereas all synovial joints are classified as diarthroses.

Method of Joints: Problem Solving II

Consider a truss structure with frictionless joints fixed to a wall and roller support. If a force of 150 N is applied to joint A, the forces in each member of the truss can be determined using the method of joints.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Joint actions are influenced by shared goals, altering social inhibition of return (IOR). This research shows that pursuing a common objective modulates how individuals orient attention in response to a co-actor's actions.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Social Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Joint actions involve complementary actions and shared spatial focus.
  • Social inhibition of return (IOR) describes slower responses to previously attended locations.
  • Achieving joint goals may necessitate attending to a co-actor's previous actions, potentially conflicting with social IOR.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the goal of joint actions modulates social inhibition of return (IOR).
  • To determine if pursuing a shared objective alters attentional orienting towards a co-actor's actions.
  • To extend research on perception-action effects by examining the role of joint goals.

Main Methods:

  • Participants performed cued location responses with a virtual co-actor.
  • Experiments involved either individual goals or joint goals requiring complementary actions.
  • Social IOR was measured by comparing response times to previously acted-upon locations versus alternate locations.

Main Results:

  • Social IOR was significantly modulated when participants and the co-actor pursued a joint goal.
  • The presence of a shared objective altered the typical social inhibition of return effect.
  • Attentional orienting was influenced by the social relationship and the shared goal between agents.

Conclusions:

  • Attentional orienting during joint actions is affected by both spatial and social factors.
  • Shared goals play a crucial role in modulating interpersonal perception-action effects.
  • The way one agent's actions influence another's perception and action depends on shared intentionality.
