The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

4.0K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

4.7K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

Area of Science:

  • Pathology
  • Digital Image Analysis
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Accurate differentiation of thyroid lesions is crucial for patient management.
  • Traditional methods can be subjective, necessitating objective diagnostic tools.
  • Digital image analysis offers a reproducible approach to histopathological assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role of detailed morphometric analysis in distinguishing benign from malignant thyroid lesions.
  • To assess the diagnostic accuracy of nuclear morphometry in thyroid histopathology.
  • To investigate the utility of computerized morphometry in thyroid lesion diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • Histopathological preparations from 10 benign and 26 malignant thyroid cases were analyzed.
  • Nuclear morphometric parameters (area, perimeter, intensity, color, width, roundness) were measured using a microscope and computerized video system.
  • Statistical analysis was performed on measured nuclear parameters.

Main Results:

  • Key nuclear morphometric parameters were significant in differentiating benign and malignant thyroid lesions.
  • Morphometry in cytological smears increased diagnostic accuracy for suspected malignant follicular lesions.
  • Computerized morphometry demonstrated an unbiased approach, enhancing diagnostic precision.

Conclusions:

  • Nuclear morphometry is a valuable tool for objective and accurate differentiation of thyroid lesions.
  • Digital image analysis and computerized morphometry improve diagnostic accuracy in thyroid pathology.
  • This technique supports better correlation with clinical and imaging data for improved patient care.
