High-dose corticosteroids (CS) significantly decrease immunoglobulin (Ig) levels in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, even when treated with disease-modifying drugs (DMD). This CS effect on Ig levels is a crucial factor to consider in MS research.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Neurology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Immunoglobulin (Ig) levels can change with immunomodulatory drugs used for multiple sclerosis (MS).
- The impact of high-dose corticosteroids (CS) on Ig levels in MS patients is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of disease-modifying drugs (DMD) and corticosteroids (CS) on immunoglobulin levels in MS patients.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective study analyzed 1204 samples from 304 MS patients over 7 years.
- Changes in Ig levels were examined in relation to CS administration in a single MS center.
Main Results:
- CS infusion was associated with significantly lower IgG levels in MS patients within 24 months.
- Lower IgG levels were observed in DMD-treated patients who also received CS.
- CS interacted with DMDs to decrease IgM levels.
Conclusions:
- Decreased Ig levels during DMD treatment in MS patients are strongly linked to CS exposure.
- The persistent effect of CS on Ig levels is a significant confounding variable for future MS research involving Ig measurements.
