Summary

Neonatal-perinatal medicine (NPM) fellows need communication skills training, but formal curricula are often lacking. Simulation-based training improves fellows' comfort in handling difficult NICU conversations.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Neonatology
  • Communication Skills

Background:

  • Communication skills are essential for neonatal-perinatal medicine (NPM) fellows.
  • Many NPM fellowship programs lack formal communication skills curricula.
  • Experiential learning, including role-play and simulation, is the standard for communication training since the late 1990s.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the importance of communication skills training for NPM fellows.
  • To review the current state of communication skills curricula in neonatology.
  • To discuss the benefits of simulation-based training for fellows.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on communication skills training in neonatology.
  • Focus on simulation-based learning methods.
  • Analysis of studies concerning antenatal counseling, family meetings, and end-of-life conversations.

Main Results:

  • NPM fellows trained with simulation report increased confidence in managing difficult NICU discussions.
  • Existing research primarily addresses antenatal counseling, with less focus on other critical communication scenarios.
  • Published curricula for simulation-based communication skills exist and can be adapted.

Conclusions:

  • Formal communication skills training, particularly simulation-based, is crucial for NPM fellows.
  • Adapting existing simulation curricula can address the need for improved communication skills in neonatology.
  • Further development and implementation of these curricula are recommended.
