Summary

This study reveals Multiple Sclerosis (MS) characteristics in Iraq, noting a lower prevalence possibly due to diagnostic challenges. Early MS diagnosis and management are crucial for improving patient quality of life.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a significant neurological disorder impacting global health.
  • Understanding MS epidemiology and clinical features is vital for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and epidemiological profile of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients in Ninevah, Iraq.
  • To determine MS prevalence, incidence, and associated functional disability in the region.

Main Methods:

  • A case-series study involving 418 patients diagnosed with MS using McDonald criteria.
  • Utilized Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Score (EDSS) for functional disability assessment.

Main Results:

  • Predicted MS prevalence of 10.3 per 100,000; annual incidence 4.6-11.57 per million.
  • Average age of onset 27.7 years; female-male ratio 1:0.6. Sensory symptoms were most prevalent.
  • Relapsing-remitting MS was the most common subtype; 68.5% had mild disability.

Conclusions:

  • MS characteristics in Iraq align with other Middle Eastern countries, but prevalence appears lower.
  • Underestimation, limited diagnostic tools, and neurologist shortages may affect reported MS prevalence.
  • Emphasizes the need for early MS diagnosis and effective management to enhance patient outcomes.
