Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Stimulants01:29

Stimulants

226
Stimulants are substances that enhance neural activity and elevate dopamine levels in the brain, leading to their highly addictive nature. These drugs include cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, caffeine, and nicotine, each with distinct mechanisms of action and varied health implications.
Cocaine can be administered via snorting, injection, or smoking. It primarily functions by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, resulting in a euphoric high characterized by an intense sensation of happiness and...

Cancer Prevention

6.2K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

12.7K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Community-Based Participatory Research
  • Adolescent Health

Background:

  • E-cigarettes are the leading tobacco product used by US youth, yet prevention programs are scarce.
  • Vaping prevention efforts often overlook Spanish-speaking, low-income Latinx parents.
  • Parents are crucial in youth tobacco control, but outreach to this demographic is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and implement an e-cigarette prevention program tailored for Spanish-speaking parents in low-income Latinx communities.
  • To utilize promotoras de salud (community health workers) to deliver culturally relevant vaping prevention education.

Main Methods:

  • A community-academic team collaborated with a Project Advisory Committee.
  • Focus groups with parents, youth, and promotoras informed curriculum development.
  • 61 promotoras were trained to deliver the program to 657 community members using Spanish-language resources.

Main Results:

  • Community feedback was integral to creating appropriate educational materials.
  • Promotoras showed significant increases in e-cigarette knowledge and confidence post-training.
  • Community members gained knowledge of e-cigarette risks and intended to discuss vaping with their children.

Conclusions:

  • Promotora-led programming is a viable strategy for vaping prevention and control.
  • This approach shows promise for effectively reaching and engaging the Latinx community on youth vaping issues.
