Asthma during pregnancy does not appear to affect psychological wellbeing. This study found no increased rates of depression or anxiety symptoms in pregnant women with asthma compared to those without.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Pulmonology
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Asthma is common in pregnancy, but its impact on maternal psychological health is understudied.
- Investigating the link between asthma and mental health during gestation is crucial for comprehensive prenatal care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if pregnant women with asthma experience higher rates of depression and anxiety symptoms.
- To assess the relationship between asthma and psychological wellbeing in pregnant individuals.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) birth cohort, including 738 pregnant women (81 with asthma).
- Administered the Family Apgar, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) at various gestational points.
- Compared psychological assessment scores between asthmatic and non-asthmatic pregnant women.
Main Results:
- No statistically significant differences in depression or anxiety symptom scores were observed between asthmatic and non-asthmatic pregnant women.
- Mean scores on the Family Apgar, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and STAI were comparable across both groups.
- The prevalence of scores outside the normal range for psychological wellbeing measures was similar in pregnant women with and without asthma.
Conclusions:
- Pregnancy-related asthma is not associated with adverse psychological wellbeing.
- Maternal asthma does not appear to increase the risk for depression or anxiety symptoms during pregnancy.

Upper Respiratory Drugs: Antitussives, Expectorants, and Mucolytics
Antitussives include codeine, dextromethorphan (Robitussin), and benzonatate (Tessalon). Codeine and dextromethorphan exert their effects centrally by suppressing the cough reflex center in the medulla. Benzonatate operates peripherally within the respiratory tract by...

Asthma: Pathogenesis and Management
Asthma is classified as allergic and non-allergic. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander trigger allergic asthma, while factors like cold air, intense emotions, or exercise can induce non-allergic asthma.

Additionally, environmental and genetic factors play crucial roles in determining an individual's susceptibility to asthma and the severity of their condition.
