Steps in the Modeling Process

216
Albert Bandura's theory of observational learning identifies four critical processes: attention, retention, motor reproduction, and reinforcement or motivation.
Attention is the first necessary component for observational learning. It involves focusing on what the model is doing and saying. For example, if you decide to take a drawing class to enhance your skills, you need to pay close attention to the instructor's words and hand movements. The characteristics of the model significantly...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Anatomy Education

Background:

  • The flipped classroom model is popular in anatomy education for blended learning.
  • The long-term impact of continuous flipped classroom teaching on topographic anatomy learning is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare student learning experience and performance between continuous and short-term flipped classroom models in anatomy.
  • To evaluate the effect of long-term flipped classroom implementation on topographic anatomy acquisition.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving third-year undergraduate students (n=65 experimental, n=45 control).
  • Utilized a five-point Likert scale survey to assess student perceptions of the flipped classroom.
  • Analyzed learning performance through regional anatomy questions and case-based studies.

Main Results:

  • Students in the continuous flipped classroom group reported a significantly higher impact on learning difficult anatomy concepts (p=0.0346).
  • The experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in regional anatomy assessments (p=0.0207).
  • No significant differences were found in case-based study performance, though independent learning showed a trend (p=0.0604).

Conclusions:

  • Long-term implementation of the flipped classroom model positively impacts anatomy students' learning experience and performance.
  • A "dose" effect of active learning is observed with sustained use of the flipped classroom.
  • Findings support evidence-informed approaches to optimize anatomy education through continuous flipped classroom strategies.
