Background:

Inconsistent patient care due to varying protocols among sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) programs.
Lack of utilization of evidence-based recommendations in sexual assault care.
Need for standardized, evidence-based protocols in rape crisis centers (RCCs).

Purpose of the Study:

To implement an evidence-based treatment protocol for sexual assault survivors.
To improve patient care through standardized protocols and SANE education.
To assess the impact of a quality improvement project on SANE practice.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart reviews examining 21 protocol components pre- and post-implementation.
Administration of SANE knowledge and self-efficacy quizzes before, immediately after, and 3 months post-education.
Comparison of compliance rates and SANE knowledge/self-efficacy scores.

Main Results:

Overall compliance increased from 42.1% (RCC) and 17.9% (hospital) to 85.3% (RCC) and 56% (hospital).
Individual protocol component compliance varied significantly.
SANE knowledge and self-efficacy showed improvement, though not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

Nurses are pivotal in driving protocol changes to improve patient outcomes.
The quality improvement project provides a model for other nursing professionals to implement evidence-based practice.
