    Summary

    Chronic hypoxemia in respiratory patients impairs kidney function, reducing renal clearances of key electrolytes and urea. Arterial blood oxygen levels directly correlate with these renal dysfunctions, suggesting a causal link.

    Background:

    • Chronic respiratory insufficiency is often associated with renal dysfunction.
    • The role of arterial blood hypoxemia in the development of renal issues requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze renal dysfunctions in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency.
    • To investigate the contribution of arterial blood hypoxemia to the genesis of these renal dysfunctions.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparison of renal clearances of electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, Ca, Mg, Pi), urea, and creatinine.
    • Analysis involved 36 patients with chronic hypoxemia and 15 normosemic controls.
    • Correlation analysis between renal clearances and arterial blood gas levels (pO2, pCO2, [H+]).

    Main Results:

    • Significantly lower renal clearances for Na, K, Cl, Ca, and urea were observed in hypoxemic patients compared to controls.
    • Correlations between clearances of these substances and arterial pO2 levels were statistically significant.
