Skeleton and Calcium Homeostasis01:21

Skeleton and Calcium Homeostasis

4.6K
Calcium is not only the most abundant mineral in bone but also the most abundant mineral in the human body. Calcium ions are needed for bone mineralization, tooth health, heart rate regulation and strength of contraction, blood coagulation, the contraction of smooth and skeletal muscle cells, and the regulation of nerve impulse conduction. The average calcium level in the blood is about 10 mg/dL. When the body cannot maintain this level, a person will experience hypo or hypercalcemia.

Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction

456
Chronic bowel diseases are a group of long-term conditions affecting the digestive tract, characterized by inflammation and damage to the gut lining. These conditions primarily include irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease

253
Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Calcinosis cutis involves insoluble calcium salt deposition in skin and subcutaneous tissues.
  • It can lead to inflammation, infection, pain, and functional disability.

Observation:

  • A case of scleroderma (SSc) with calcinosis universalis is presented.
  • The patient developed recurrent infections at a sacrococcygeal calcification.

Findings:

  • Calcinosis universalis in SSc can precipitate life-threatening recurrent infections.
  • Sacrococcygeal calcification was the site of fatal infections in this case.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the severe complications of calcinosis universalis in SSc.
  • Early recognition and management of infections associated with extensive calcinosis are crucial.
  • Understanding the link between calcinosis and infection may improve patient outcomes.
