Background:

  • Understanding vitamin K2 levels in T2DM patients is essential for exploring novel treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare serum vitamin K2 levels in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus versus a healthy control group.
  • To assess the correlation between vitamin K2 levels and key glycemic and lipid parameters in T2DM patients.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 60 patients with T2DM and 30 healthy controls.
  • Serum vitamin K2 was quantified using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).
  • Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profiles (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C), and body mass index (BMI) were also measured.

Main Results:

  • Vitamin K2 levels were significantly lower in the T2DM group (185.13±30.08 pg/ml) compared to the control group (303.91±58.60 pg/ml) (p<0.001).
  • T2DM patients showed significantly higher HbA1c, cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels (p<0.001).
  • High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were significantly decreased in the T2DM group compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus demonstrate significantly reduced serum vitamin K2 levels.
  • Vitamin K2 deficiency may be linked to poorer glycemic control and adverse lipid profiles in T2DM.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the therapeutic potential of vitamin K2 supplementation in managing T2DM.
