Area of Science:

  • Polymer science
  • Additive Manufacturing (AM)
  • Material Jetting Technology

Background:

  • Material jetting AM is increasingly popular for high-accuracy polymer products.
  • Micro-hole quality is critical for many industrial applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate micro-hole quality produced by material jetting AM.
  • Evaluate the accuracy of micro-holes in three basic orientations.
  • Propose a novel methodology using a transparent artifact for micro-hole evaluation.

Main Methods:

  • Designed a test artifact with horizontal and vertical micro-holes on planar and curved surfaces.
  • Manufactured samples using PolyJet technology with translucent photopolymer resin.
  • Analyzed micro-hole features (matte/glossy finish, coarse/medium diameter) via microscopy.
  • Utilized statistical design of experiments to analyze factors affecting micro-hole diameter deviation.

Main Results:

  • Microscopy revealed quality differences in micro-hole features.
  • Matte finishing with micro-holes oriented along the x-axis and z-axis yielded the best results.
  • Smallest micro-hole diameter achieved was 0.5 mm; larger diameters recommended for industrial post-processing.
  • Confirmatory experiment on a wing sample confirmed result repeatability.

Conclusions:

  • Material jetting AM can produce high-quality micro-holes.
  • Matte finish and specific micro-hole orientation significantly impact accuracy.
  • Optimized parameters are crucial for achieving desired micro-hole dimensions in industrial AM applications.
