Summary
Robotic surgical systems ROSA and Mako demonstrate comparable accuracy in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Both systems effectively restore key anatomical parameters like joint line height and tibial slope, showing no significant differences in surgical accuracy.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Robotics in Medicine
- Arthroplasty
Background:
- Increasing adoption of robotic surgical technology in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA).
- ROSA knee system offers image-based and imageless modes; Mako system is image-based.
- Need for comparative accuracy assessment of different robotic TKA systems.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the surgical accuracy of the ROSA and Mako robotic knee systems in TKA.
- Specifically evaluate accuracy in restoring joint line height, patella height, posterior condylar offset, and tibial slope.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of prospectively collected data from initial 50 ROSA TKAs and 50 Mako TKAs.
- Performed by two high-volume surgeons.
- Comparison of immediate pre-operative and post-operative radiographs to assess component positioning accuracy.
Main Results:
- ROSA system showed mean differences: JLH 0.47mm, PCO 0.16mm, TS 0.9°, PH 0.01.
- MAKO system showed mean differences: JLH 0.26mm, PCO -0.26mm, TS 1.8°, PH 0.03.
- No statistically significant difference in accuracy between ROSA and MAKO systems for the evaluated parameters.
Conclusions:
- This is the first study comparing ROSA and Mako robotic systems in TKA.
- Both ROSA and Mako systems are highly accurate in restoring native joint line height, patella height, posterior condylar offset, and tibial slope.
- No significant difference in component positioning accuracy was found between the two robotic systems.
