Increasing the outer shell opening diameter of double spherical shell (DSS) electric field sensors enhances their sensitivity. This improved DSS open-hole design offers better performance for complex electric field measurements compared to traditional flat plate sensors.
Area of Science:
- Electrical Engineering
- Sensor Technology
- Electromagnetics
Background:
- Double spherical shell (DSS) sensors offer compact size and simple fabrication for electric field measurements.
- Existing DSS sensors exhibit low sensitivity, limiting their effectiveness in complex environments.
Purpose of the Study:
- To enhance the sensitivity of DSS electric field sensors.
- To investigate the impact of outer spherical shell opening diameter on sensor performance.
Main Methods:
- Theoretical analysis of outer shell opening diameter effects.
- Design and fabrication of DSS sensors with 2, 4, and 6 mm apertures.
- Experimental testing of sensor sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis, repeatability, and rotational characteristics.
Main Results:
- Sensor sensitivity increases with larger outer shell opening diameters.
- DSS sensors with open holes demonstrate good linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability.
- Rotational characteristic experiments showed relative errors of 18%, 23%, and 31% for different apertures.
Conclusions:
- The DSS open-hole structure significantly improves sensor sensitivity and performance.
- The modified DSS sensor is more suitable for electric field measurements than conventional flat plate sensors.
