Positive genital image is linked to safer sexual health practices in Malaysian adults. This study highlights the importance of body image in sexual health interventions for young adults.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Public Health
- Sociology
Background:
- Previous research on body image and sexual health behaviors yielded mixed results, primarily from Western populations.
- Understanding these associations in diverse cultural contexts, like Malaysia, is crucial for developing effective interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between negative body image indicators and sexual health practices in Malaysian emerging adults.
- To determine if gender moderates these associations.
Main Methods:
- An online survey was administered to 584 Malaysian adults (aged 18-30).
- Participants completed validated measures of body image satisfaction (appearance, body size, weight, height, genital image).
- Sexual health behaviors assessed included partnered sex, condomless sex, HIV screening, and lifetime number of penetrative sex partners.
Main Results:
- Higher genital image satisfaction correlated with a history of partnered sex and fewer lifetime sex partners.
- No significant associations were found between other body image indices and condomless sex.
- Gender did not moderate the observed associations, except for an initial interaction effect on HIV testing that became non-significant after controlling for sex partners.
Conclusions:
- Promoting positive genital image is essential for encouraging safer sexual health behaviors among emerging adults.
- Body image interventions should consider the specific cultural context and focus on genital image for sexual health promotion.
