A Novel Method for Involving Women of Color at High Risk for Preterm Birth in Research Priority Setting

Background:

Nursing students acting as doulas receive positive feedback from birthing individuals.
Existing programs lack focus on diversity in student recruitment, pregnant populations served, and curriculum development.
There is a need for healthcare professionals trained in culturally congruent labor support.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the Interdisciplinary Doula Project, an initiative designed to improve diversity and clinical competencies among university health students.
To evaluate the program's impact on preparing students for roles in labor and delivery.

Main Methods:

University students (n=27) in nursing (77.8%) and other health fields (22.2%) underwent doula training.
Participants completed diversity seminars and 36 hours of intrapartum care.
Program outcomes included student skill enhancement and subsequent employment.

Main Results:

The program successfully integrated nursing and other health students, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
Participants gained practical experience in intrapartum care, enhancing their clinical skills.
Seven nursing students secured labor and delivery positions post-graduation.

Conclusions:

The Interdisciplinary Doula Project offers a model for enhancing diversity and clinical skills in future registered nurses.
This program has the potential to increase the number of nurses providing culturally congruent labor support to vulnerable populations.
Implementing such interdisciplinary programs can improve maternal healthcare outcomes.
