This study optimized polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) synthesis for improved concrete performance. A novel PCE-P, synthesized at room temperature, demonstrated excellent dispersibility and comparable hydration to high-temperature produced PCE.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Chemical Engineering
- Construction Materials
Background:
- Polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCE) are crucial for concrete workability.
- Molecular structure significantly impacts PCE performance, affecting dispersion and water retention.
- Existing synthesis methods can lead to variations in PCE properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review PCE synthesis processes and identify an optimal method.
- To develop a modified polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE-P) with controllable molecular characteristics.
- To investigate the impact of PCE-P on cement paste properties.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of PCE synthesis techniques.
- Orthogonal experimental design to optimize synthesis parameters.
- Characterization of PCE-P, including molecular weight distribution, chain length, and functional groups.
- Evaluation of cement paste properties: surface tension, fluidity, and zeta potential.
Main Results:
- An optimal synthesis method was identified, yielding PCE-P.
- PCE-P exhibited a wider molecular weight distribution and longer main/side chains.
- A 24.04% reduction in surface tension was observed for PCE-P, indicating enhanced dispersibility.
- PCE-P showed comparable initial hydration and conversion rates to high-temperature synthesized PCE.
Conclusions:
- Room temperature synthesis of PCE-P is feasible and effective.
- The optimized PCE-P structure enhances cement paste dispersibility and fluidity.
- PCE-P offers a promising alternative for improving concrete performance.
