Dental students generally have positive perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical decision-making. Further ethical considerations are essential for patient-centred care when integrating AI in dentistry.
Area of Science:
- Dental Education
- Medical Ethics
- Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Background:
- The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical decision-making presents novel ethical challenges.
- Understanding dental students' perspectives on these ethical considerations is crucial for future dental practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore undergraduate clinical dental students' perceptions of ethical considerations related to AI in clinical decision-making.
- To assess differences in perceptions based on academic year and sex.
Main Methods:
- A validated online questionnaire with 21 closed-ended, five-point Likert scale questions was administered.
- Data from 165 clinical-year dental students were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and independent t-tests.
Main Results:
- Overall positive perceptions regarding AI ethical considerations were reported across all domains.
- Perceptions were largely uniform across academic years and sexes.
- Female students showed stronger agreement on prioritizing patient consent and privacy.
Conclusions:
- Undergraduate clinical dental students exhibit positive attitudes towards AI in clinical decision-making.
- Addressing ethical considerations is vital to ensure AI enhances patient outcomes while maintaining ethical principles and patient-centered care.
