Summary

This study used photoglottography to analyze vocal attack during voice therapy exercises. Results show different vocal fold open quotients (OQ) for various semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE), suggesting tailored SOVTE can improve voice quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare PGG-derived OQ parameters across natural, hard, and soft voice onsets, and different SOVTEs.

  • Eighteen healthy adults (10 males, 8 females) participated.
  • Photoglottography (PGG) was used to record the first five vocal waves.
  • Measurements included natural voice, hard attack, soft attack, and SOVTEs (humming, 6mm and 13mm tube phonation, lip trill), focusing on 25% vocal fold open quotient (OQ).

Main Results:

  • No significant sex-related differences were observed in 25% OQ.
  • Hard vocal attack showed a significantly lower 25% OQ compared to soft attack, tongue-out humming, and lip trill in the first wave.
  • Soft attack yielded a higher 25% OQ than humming, 6mm tube phonation, and lip trill. Different SOVTEs resulted in varying 25% OQ values, with 13mm tube phonation showing a higher OQ than 6mm. Voice onset OQ varied across SOVTE techniques and vocal waves.

Conclusions:

  • The choice of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) can significantly influence vocal fold dynamics.
  • Tailoring SOVTE selection to individual patient needs may enhance voice therapy outcomes.
  • Further research is recommended to validate these findings in patients with dysphonia.
