Quality assurance and the dentist-patient relationship
Abstract:
This article has suggested that the role of the doctor-patient relationship in a quality assurance program is a major and multifaceted one. The essence of the interaction between doctor and patient has personal, psychological, and technical aspects. They proceed beyond the office walls into the community and support systems. The measurable outcome of any diagnosis and treatment is a result of the doctor-patient relationship as well as the assessment of the modalities of care and the environment surrounding the rendering of that care. We have reached a time in the health care activities of this nation, at which there are many functions, facilities, and organizations participating in all aspects of health care. I believe that the doctor-patient relationship is still the core of the system and has a direct effect on the quality of care. The future will probably see greater emphasis on standards of care, and there will be greater involvement of quality assessment. In the long run, this will be in the best interest of the doctor and the patient.
