Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

87
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

342
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychometrics
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Background:

  • Effective tools are needed to measure autism knowledge and assess the impact of awareness initiatives.
  • Existing measures lack psychometric validation for the UK context.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a brief questionnaire assessing contemporary autism knowledge in the UK.
  • The measure aims to capture between-respondent variability and within-respondent changes over time.

Main Methods:

  • Item generation and refinement through expert and lay input.
  • Item response theory and exploratory factor analysis for validation.
  • Validation data collected from 201 lay participants.

Main Results:

  • A 14-item questionnaire, the Knowledge of Autism Questionnaire-UK (KAQ-UK), was finalized.
  • The KAQ-UK demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency and a one-factor structure.
  • The questionnaire successfully differentiated between parents of autistic individuals and those without an autism affiliation.

Conclusions:

  • The KAQ-UK is a new, freely available measure for assessing autism knowledge in the UK.
  • It can be used to evaluate understanding across different groups and track changes post-intervention.
  • Further validation studies are recommended to fully establish its measurement properties.
