Generalized Anxiety Disorder01:30

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

128
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Integrative Medicine

Background:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) prevalence increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Acupuncture presents a safe, effective, and non-addictive therapeutic option for GAD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the mechanism of brain plasticity in GAD patients.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of acupuncture for GAD.
  • To assess differences in cerebral cortical excitability between GAD patients and healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized clinical trial protocol involving 66 GAD patients and 20 healthy controls.
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to measure cortical excitability (MEPs, CSP, RMT).
  • Assessment of Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) scores and blood biomarkers (GABA, 5-HT, BDNF).

Main Results:

  • The study protocol is the first to compare cerebral cortical excitability in GAD patients versus healthy subjects.
  • It will assess clinical efficacy and reliability of acupuncture intervention for GAD.
  • Secondary outcomes include changes in neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors.

Conclusions:

  • This research aims to identify acupuncture as a viable non-pharmacological treatment for GAD.
  • Findings may elucidate the neurobiological underpinnings of GAD and acupuncture's therapeutic effects.
  • The study seeks to provide evidence for acupuncture's role in managing anxiety disorders.
