Background:

Nursing workload is a critical factor in healthcare, yet its physical, mental, and emotional dimensions remain underexplored.
Existing research has identified a limited number of variables associated with nursing workload and work environments.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if variables consistently correlating with nursing workload can be identified.
To differentiate between universal workload variables and those specific to particular care contexts.

Main Methods:

A descriptive correlational analysis was employed using a cross-sectional design.
Data were collected via surveys from registered nurses across Italy after randomly assigned shifts.

Main Results:

456 surveys were analyzed from 195 shifts across six hospitals (four public, two private).
Commonly associated variables included patient complexity, admissions/discharges, patient/family communication, physician contact, and unscheduled activities.
Setting-specific variables comprised patient isolation, specialties, nurse-to-patient ratio, staffing adequacy, peer collaboration, documentation, education, and medical urgency.

Conclusions:

Certain variables consistently impact nursing workload across different settings, while others are context-dependent.
Measuring nursing workload across its various dimensions is essential for timely implementation of improvement strategies by nurses and managers.
