Summary

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) simulation shows promise for fundamental nursing skills learning (FNSL). Addressing usability concerns can enhance its role as a complementary educational tool for nursing students.

Background:

Learner perceptions of technology impact educational experiences.
Limited research exists on immersive virtual reality (IVR) for fundamental nursing skills learning (FNSL).

Purpose of the Study:

To explore first-year nursing students' perceived usability of IVR simulations for FNSL.
To investigate student perspectives on IVR as a learning modality for FNSL.

Main Methods:

Mixed-methods design with an educational intervention.
65 first-year nursing students participated in 2 IVR simulation sessions.
Post-intervention data collected via surveys and focus groups.

Main Results:

Students expressed positive attitudes towards IVR simulation for FNSL.
Identified IVR simulation as a valuable complementary learning tool.
Highlighted barriers related to students' perceived usability of the technology.

Conclusions:

IVR simulation holds potential as a complementary method for FNSL.
Addressing usability issues is crucial for successful integration of IVR simulation.
