Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones01:20

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

4.5K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

Summary

Inflammatory markers like neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may be associated with Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). Excluding outlier data revealed significant differences, suggesting inflammation

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology and Immunology
  • Autoimmune and inflammatory eye diseases

Background:

  • Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is an inflammatory autoimmune condition often linked to Graves' disease.
  • The role of specific inflammatory markers in TED pathogenesis remains unclear.
  • Understanding inflammation in TED is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between key inflammatory markers and TED.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic potential of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in TED.

Main Methods:

  • Meta-analysis of 5 eligible studies including 734 participants.
  • Investigated associations between NLR, PLR, MLR, and TED.
  • Performed sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of outlier data.

Main Results:

  • Initial analysis showed no significant differences in NLR, PLR, or MLR between TED and control groups.
  • Sensitivity analysis, excluding an outlier study, revealed significant differences in these inflammatory markers.
  • These findings suggest a potential link between NLR, PLR, MLR, and TED.

Conclusions:

  • Inflammatory markers may play a role in the complex pathogenesis of TED.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm the association and clinical utility of these markers.
  • Inflammation insights could inform future TED diagnosis and treatment strategies.
