Area of Science:

  • Second Language Acquisition
  • Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)

Background:

  • Glosses are frequently studied in CALL for L2 vocabulary acquisition.
  • Previous research has yielded varied results on gloss effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize existing meta-analyses on the impact of glosses on L2 vocabulary learning.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of the evidence base.

Main Methods:

  • A second-order meta-analysis was conducted.
  • Seven primary meta-analyses (136 original studies, 2008-2023) were synthesized.

Main Results:

  • Overall medium effect size for gloss use (g = 0.63-0.76).
  • Multimedia glosses showed large effects for beginners.
  • Expository texts and single-mode glosses were more effective.
  • Pop-up and margin glosses had medium effects.

Conclusions:

  • Glosses are an effective tool for L2 vocabulary acquisition.
  • Learner level, text type, and gloss modality significantly moderate effectiveness.
  • Further meta-analytic research is recommended.
