Decent work conditions, particularly organizational values and rest time, promote idealistic ethical ideologies in nurses. Safe working environments are linked to relativistic ethical ideologies among nursing staff.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Ethics
- Occupational Health Psychology
- Healthcare Management
Background:
- Work environment significantly influences nurses' ethical behavior.
- The impact of decent work on nurses' ethical ideologies remains less understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- Investigate decent work conditions and ethical ideologies among nurses.
- Analyze the influence of decent work on nurses' ethical ideologies.
Main Methods:
- Multicenter cross-sectional survey of 203 nurses in Egyptian tertiary hospitals.
- Assessed decent work using the Scale of Decent Work (15 items, 5 dimensions).
- Evaluated ethical ideologies (idealism, relativism) using the Ethics Position Questionnaire (20 items).
- Analyzed data with Pearson correlation and linear regression.
Main Results:
- Nurses reported moderate decent work conditions and relatively high ethical ideologies.
- Idealism was predicted by organizational values, free time/rest, and overall decent work score.
- Relativism was predicted by physically and interpersonally safe working conditions.
Conclusions:
- High organizational values and adequate rest foster idealistic ethical ideologies in nurses.
- Safe working conditions are associated with relativistic ethical ideologies.
- Findings can guide hospital administrators in creating supportive work environments.
