Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Aesthetic Medicine
  • Surgical Outcomes

Background:

  • Gluteal fat grafting, known as Brazilian Butt Lift, has surged in popularity.
  • Associated complications necessitate a review of current practices and outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To survey surgeons on their practices, complication rates, and outcomes in gluteal fat grafting.
  • To identify variations in surgical techniques and postoperative care.

Main Methods:

  • A detailed survey was distributed to a multidisciplinary group of surgeons in April 2022.
  • 86 out of 100 surveyed surgeons responded, providing data on their experiences.

Main Results:

  • Pulmonary fat embolism (PFE) is the most severe complication (1:23,878 fatality rate).
  • Liposuction site seromas are most frequent (2.45% rate); plastic surgeons have higher seroma odds.
  • Significant practice variations exist in fat preparation, recipient site preparation, antibiotic use, and postoperative care.

Conclusions:

  • Surgeons continue performing gluteal fat grafts despite known risks, indicating sustained demand.
  • Enhanced safety and effectiveness require ongoing research, surveillance, and technique refinement.
  • Surgeon experiences offer insights for consensus building and informed patient discussions on risks and benefits.
