  • A population-based study of 15,922 individuals with type 2 diabetes from the Health in Central Denmark study.
  • Multinomial logistic regression and Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting (IPTW) were used for analysis.

  • Diabetic neuropathy (OR 1.36) and retinopathy (OR 1.21) were significantly associated with moderate/severe periodontitis.
  • The coexistence of microvascular complications increased periodontitis odds by 1.5-fold (OR 1.51).
  • Dyslipidemia showed a positive additive effect modification on the association between microvascular complications and periodontitis.

Conclusions:

  • Diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy, individually and combined, are associated with moderate/severe periodontitis.
  • Dyslipidemia exacerbates the risk of periodontitis in individuals with diabetic microvascular complications.
  • Findings can help identify at-risk populations for targeted interventions to reduce disease burden.
