Current Trends in Nursing II

1.2K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

2.6K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...

    Summary

Nursing-sensitive indicators (NSIs) worsened during the pandemic, with significant increases in falls, CLABSI, CAUTI, HAPI, and VAE. While rates are declining, they have not yet returned to prepandemic levels by 2022.

    Area of Science:

    • Healthcare Quality
    • Nursing Research
    • Patient Safety

    Background:

    • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly stressed the nursing workforce.
    • This stress may have impacted nursing-sensitive quality indicators (NSIs), which reflect patient health status changes due to nursing care.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess if NSIs deteriorated during the pandemic.
    • To determine if these indicators returned to prepandemic levels between 2019 and 2022.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional descriptive study analyzed annual trends of five NSIs from 2019-2022.
    • Data from the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) included rates of falls, CLABSI, CAUTI, HAPI, and VAE.
    • Analysis of variance compared 2019 rates to subsequent years for adult medical-surgical and critical care units.

    Main Results:

    • All five NSIs significantly increased starting in 2020.
    • The highest rates were observed in 2020 (falls) and 2021 (other indicators), with increases ranging from 12% (CAUTI) to 49% (CLABSI).
    • Rates began to decline but had not returned to 2019 baseline levels by 2022.

    Conclusions:

    • NSIs worsened during the pandemic and are slowly returning to baseline.
    • The pandemic highlighted the critical role of nursing practice in patient safety.
    • Addressing the pandemic's impact on nurses is crucial for maintaining patient safety standards.
