Multiple Comparison Tests01:13

Multiple Comparison Tests

Multiple comparison test, abbreviated as MCT, is a post hoc analysis generally performed after comparing multiple samples with one or more tests. An MCT will help identify a significantly different sample among multiple samples or a factor among multiple factors.
It would be easy to compare two samples using a significance alpha level of 0.05. In other words, there is only one sample pair to be compared. However, it would be difficult to identify a significantly different sample if the number...

Difference from Background: Limit of Detection

The limit of detection (LOD) is the smallest amount of analyte that can be distinguished from the background noise. The LOD value corresponds to the concentration at which the analyte signal is three times larger than the standard deviation of the blank signal. Below this value, the analyte signal cannot be differentiated from the background noise. It is calculated by dividing the calibration slope by 3 times the standard deviation of the blank signals.
The LOD indicates the presence or absence...
Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments01:30

Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments

Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments (EDMs) are essential tools in modern surveying, offering precise distance measurements by emitting electromagnetic signals and calculating the time required for these signals to travel to a target and return. Two primary types of signals are used in EDMs — light waves and microwaves — each suited to specific environmental and distance requirements. Light-wave-based EDMs utilize either infrared or laser light, providing high accuracy over short distances...
Automated Microbial Diagnostics01:24

Automated Microbial Diagnostics

Automated diagnostic analyzers have transformed clinical microbiology by providing rapid and reliable methods for pathogen identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Among these systems, the Vitek 2 is widely used because it automates the traditionally labor-intensive processes of microbial identification (ID) and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST), delivering standardized and timely results that are essential for effective patient care.Microbial Identification with ID CardsThe...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Optometry
  • Vision Science

Background:

  • Accurate visual acuity (VA) testing is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring eye conditions.
  • Traditional printed VA charts and newer digital methods offer different testing modalities.
  • The Devices for an Integral Visual Examination (DIVE) is a novel device for comprehensive visual assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of various printed and digital visual acuity tests.
  • To validate the reliability and accuracy of the DIVE device for VA testing.
  • To assess the agreement and repeatability of different optotype (symbols vs. letters) and format (printed vs. digital) VA tests.

Main Methods:

  • Visual acuity was measured in 51 adult participants using standard ETDRS and LEA Symbols charts.
  • The DIVE device was used to administer HOTV and DIVE Symbols tests.
  • Agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman analysis; repeatability was also measured.

Main Results:

  • High correlation (ICC 0.95-0.97) and good agreement were found between all tested VA methods.
  • Slightly higher VA values were observed with DIVE HOTV and ETDRS compared to LEA Symbols and DIVE Symbols.
  • The ETDRS chart demonstrated the best repeatability, while all DIVE tests showed good reliability.

Conclusions:

  • The evaluated visual acuity tests, including DIVE, provide comparable results in adults.
  • Letter optotypes generally yield higher VA measurements than symbol optotypes.
  • The DIVE device is a reliable tool for visual acuity testing, showing strong correlation with established printed methods.
