Cancer Prevention

6.1K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

7.5K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Science
  • Biotechnology
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) presents significant challenges in treatment and survival.
  • Anthocyanins show anti-cancer properties but are often insufficient from natural sources.
  • Bioengineered crops, like tomatoes, can enhance dietary anthocyanin intake.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review anthocyanins' health benefits and mechanisms in CRC.
  • To examine bioengineered tomatoes for increased anthocyanin content.
  • To discuss anthocyanin-enriched tomatoes for CRC prevention and future research.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review on anthocyanins, CRC, and bioengineering.
  • Analysis of mechanisms by which anthocyanins affect CRC development.
  • Case studies of bioengineered anthocyanin-rich tomatoes.

Main Results:

  • Anthocyanins modulate transcription factors involved in CRC.
  • Bioengineered tomatoes successfully increased anthocyanin levels.
  • Anthocyanin extracts from engineered tomatoes show potential in CRC prevention.

Conclusions:

  • Bioengineered tomatoes offer a viable strategy to increase dietary anthocyanins for CRC prevention.
  • Anthocyanins from engineered tomatoes may reduce inflammation and alter metabolic pathways relevant to CRC.
  • Further research is needed to optimize anthocyanin enrichment in tomatoes.
