Background:

Migrant children, including asylum seekers and refugees, experience significant stress and vulnerability, increasing their risk for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
ACEs in childhood can lead to long-term health issues and poor mental health outcomes in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

To implement a standardized screening tool for ACEs in children under 19 residing in a community shelter.
To identify mental health needs among migrant children through systematic ACEs assessment.

Main Methods:

The Model for Improvement framework guided the implementation process.
The Pediatric ACEs and Related Life Events Screener was utilized over a 10-week period within a community shelter setting.

Main Results:

All children who underwent screening reported experiencing at least one ACE.
The screening process successfully identified adverse experiences, facilitating access to mental health services and specialist consultations.

Conclusions:

Implementing ACEs screening in migrant children is vital for uncovering potential mental health challenges.
This quality improvement project highlights the importance of early intervention and targeted support for migrant children affected by trauma.
