  • To document DEI efforts by US residency program director (PD) associations.
  • To identify opportunities for collaboration within the GME community regarding DEI.
  • To assess the current landscape of DEI initiatives in GME.

  • A 17-question needs assessment survey was developed by a DEI workgroup.
  • The survey investigated DEI activities across various residency PD associations.
  • Data was collected electronically from 30 specialty PD association representatives.

Main Results:

  • 73% of PD associations reported having DEI committees and initiatives.
  • Providing resources for diverse representation and recruitment was common.
  • Fewer resources were available for pipeline programs and resident retention.
  • Faculty development focused more on teaching DEI than health disparities.

Conclusions:

  • Specialty PD associations have implemented significant DEI interventions.
  • Educational gaps persist in specific DEI content and faculty development.
  • Enhanced curricular dissemination strategies are needed for DEI in GME.
