Background:

  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) prevalence is rising, often diagnosed incidentally.
  • Aortic dissection is a critical complication of TAA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify clinical, laboratory, and morphological factors associated with aortic dissection in TAA patients.
  • To reveal predictors of aorta wall dissection in TAA.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 109 TAA patients (43 with dissection).
  • Evaluated arterial hypertension, blood analysis, biochemistry, and Von Willebrand factor expression.
  • Immunomorphological assessment of vasa vasorum in the aorta.

Main Results:

  • Arterial hypertension significantly correlated with aortic dissection (p=0.002).
  • Lymphocyte (p=0.021) and segmented neutrophil (p=0.001) levels were associated with dissection.
  • Increased Von Willebrand factor expression and vasa vasorum prevalence were observed in dissected aortas (p=0.018).

Conclusions:

  • Aortic dissection in TAA is associated with hypertension.
  • The condition involves an inflammatory response.
