CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine01:27

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

177
Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

26
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

6.3K
Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Prenatal alcohol exposure is a significant risk factor for fetal development.
  • Public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing alcohol consumption during pregnancy were implemented in Israel between 2011 and 2020.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess changes in alcohol consumption patterns among pregnant women in Israel.
  • To compare current alcohol consumption data (2021-2023) with historical data (2009-2010).

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in three public hospitals in Israel.
  • Questionnaires collected data on alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy.
  • Stratified analysis and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze data.

Main Results:

  • Alcohol consumption during pregnancy significantly decreased from 2009-2010 to 2021-2023 (OR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.52-0.88).
  • Alcohol consumption before pregnancy, parity, and smoking were predictors of alcohol use during pregnancy.
  • Significantly more women received guidance on alcohol consumption during pregnancy in the recent survey (29.7% vs. prior).

Conclusions:

  • Public awareness and educational efforts have contributed to a reduction in prenatal alcohol exposure.
  • Continued public and professional education is recommended to further mitigate risks associated with prenatal alcohol exposure.
