Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing

61
Subjective well-being (SWB) refers to an individual's self-evaluation of their overall life satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment. This multifaceted construct is typically assessed by analyzing the balance of positive and negative emotions alongside perceptions of life satisfaction. Personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion are strongly associated with variations in SWB, offering critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of emotional well-being.

Regular exercise and meditation serve as essential tools in managing stress and promoting physical and mental well-being.
The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response. Research shows that adults who exercise regularly have nearly half the...

Stress and Mental Health

77
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

The Scientific Method

59.2K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Summary

This study found that an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Life (MBCT-L) course significantly improved subjective well-being (SWB) in Taiwanese university students. The intervention enhanced overall happiness and validated a shorter measure for future research.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Mindfulness Studies
  • Higher Education

Background:

  • Mindfulness interventions show broad benefits, but research on formal courses for Taiwanese university students' subjective well-being (SWB) is limited.
  • Existing studies lack data on the specific impact of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Life (MBCT-L) on this demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of an 8-week MBCT-L course on the SWB of Taiwanese university students.
  • To examine potential differences in SWB changes based on sex and internship status.
  • To validate the reliability of a short version of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) for future research.

Main Methods:

  • An 8-week MBCT-L course was administered to 85 Taiwanese university students (38 lower-grade, 47 senior).
  • Subjective well-being was assessed using the 29-item Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) pre- and post-intervention.
  • Statistical analysis examined changes in SWB scores, considering sex and internship status.

Main Results:

  • Overall SWB scores significantly increased from 3.69 to 3.92 post-intervention.
  • Initial sex differences in SWB diminished after the MBCT-L course.
  • Differential impacts of the course were observed across sex and internship status groups.
  • The 8-item short version of the OHQ demonstrated reliability.

Conclusions:

  • The MBCT-L course effectively enhanced SWB among Taiwanese university students.
  • Mindfulness interventions can be tailored to influence SWB differently across demographic subgroups.
  • This study contributes cross-cultural data on mindfulness and SWB, validating a brief OHQ measure.
