Background:

  • Perinatal depression is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Perinatal Depression (MBCT-PD) is effective but faces scalability issues.
  • Center M is a brief, group-based adaptation of MBCT-PD designed to improve scalability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the preliminary acceptability, feasibility, mechanisms of action, and efficacy of Center M.
  • To assess the impact of Center M on depressive symptoms, mindfulness, and emotion regulation in pregnant individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods pilot study involving 99 pregnant individuals.
  • Four weekly 1-hour group telehealth sessions of Center M.
  • Data collection included self-report measures and qualitative feedback via focus groups/surveys at preintervention, postintervention, and 6-weeks postpartum.

Conclusions:

  • Center M demonstrates feasibility, acceptability, and appeal.
  • Findings suggest Center M may effectively reduce perinatal depression and enhance mindfulness.
  • Further research is needed to confirm efficacy and explore implementation capacity and sustainability.
