Attitudes01:54

Attitudes

28.2K
Attitude is our evaluation of a person, an idea, or an object. We have attitudes for many things ranging from products that we might pick up in the supermarket to people around the world to political policies. Typically, attitudes are favorable or unfavorable: positive or negative (Eagly & Chaiken, 1993). And, they have three components: an affective component (feelings), a behavioral component (the effect of the attitude on behavior), and a cognitive component (belief and knowledge;...

Confirmation Biases01:31

Confirmation Biases

5.4K
The confirmation bias is the tendency to focus on information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that is inconsistent with our expectations. For example, if you think that your professor is not very nice, you notice all of the instances of rude behavior exhibited by the professor while ignoring the countless pleasant interactions he is involved in on a daily basis. Have you ever fallen prey to the confirmation bias, either as the source or target of such bias?

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination02:55

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

90.0K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

7.3K
Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in...

Naturalistic Observations02:30

Naturalistic Observations

15.4K
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Social Proof00:52

Social Proof

27.5K
Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Summary

Mindfulness interventions did not increase proenvironmental behavior as hypothesized. Instead, a 31-day mindfulness program unexpectedly reduced preferences for proenvironmental and prosocial outcomes, suggesting a complex relationship.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Environmental Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Theoretical models suggest mindfulness enhances proenvironmental behavior.
  • Previous interventions failed to demonstrate mindfulness increasing self-reported proenvironmental actions.
  • Existing research lacks experimental evidence on mindfulness's effect on actual proenvironmental decision-making.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To experimentally test if a 31-day mindfulness intervention strengthens preferences for proenvironmental outcomes.
  • To investigate the psychological mechanisms by examining mindfulness's impact on prosociality and future orientation.
  • To assess how mindfulness training influences decisions with conflicting self-interest and environmental benefits.

Main Methods:

  • A 31-day mindfulness intervention was administered.
  • Participants completed decision tasks involving self-interest versus environmental benefit conflicts.
  • Prosociality and future orientation were measured to explore psychological mediators.

Main Results:

  • Contrary to hypotheses, the mindfulness intervention decreased preferences for proenvironmental and prosocial outcomes.
  • No significant effects of the intervention were found on future orientation.
  • Baseline proenvironmental and prosocial preferences correlated, supporting a link between these behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • The study challenges the assumption that mindfulness directly promotes proenvironmental behavior.
  • Mindfulness interventions may have unintended negative effects on proenvironmental and prosocial preferences.
  • The relationship between mindfulness, proenvironmental behavior, and prosociality is more complex than previously understood.
