Intramolecular hydrogen bonds create rigid structures in multi-resonance (MR) thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, enhancing performance. This study demonstrates improved efficiency and emission properties in novel MR-TADF materials.
Area of Science:
- Organic Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Photophysics
Background:
- Hydrogen bonds (HBs) rigidify organic molecules, improving luminescent material properties.
- High-performance donor-acceptor thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials benefit from HBs.
- Application of HBs in multi-resonance (MR) TADF emitters is underexplored.
Purpose of the Study:
- Develop novel MR-TADF emitters utilizing intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs).
- Investigate the impact of IHBs on the photophysical properties and device performance of MR-TADF materials.
- Incorporate pyrimidine as a hydrogen bond acceptor in the MR-TADF design.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of MR-TADF emitters with IHBs (BN-2Pm and BN-5Pm) using pyrimidine as the HB acceptor.
- Characterization of photophysical properties including photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), emission spectra, and non-radiative decay rates.
- Fabrication and testing of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices to evaluate external quantum efficiency (EQE), current efficiency, power efficiency, and Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates.
Main Results:
- The BN-2Pm emitter, featuring IHBs, exhibited a rigid planar conformation.
- BN-2Pm showed significantly enhanced PLQY, extended emission wavelength, narrowed full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), and reduced non-radiative decay rates compared to BN-5Pm.
- Devices based on BN-2Pm achieved a high maximum EQE of 36.5%, current efficiency of 102.3 cd/A, and power efficiency of 84.6 lm/W with CIE coordinates (0.18, 0.71).
Conclusions:
- IHBs effectively induce rigid planar conformations in MR-TADF emitters.
- The developed BN-2Pm material demonstrates superior photophysical properties and device performance for OLED applications.
- This work highlights the potential of IHB engineering for advancing high-efficiency MR-TADF materials.
