Tissue Renewal without Stem Cells

After cellular or tissue damage, the resident stem cells present in the human body can locally repair and regenerate the damaged tissue or organ. However, even though some tissues do not have stem cells, they can repair and regenerate with the help of pre-existing cells. Background:

Nipple-areolar complex (NAC) reconstruction options include surgery, tattooing, or a combination.
Recent advancements in NAC tattooing have spurred discussions on tattoo-only techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

To quantify recent trends in nipple-areolar complex reconstruction choices.
To explore the driving factors behind these reconstruction trends.

Main Methods:

A 15-year retrospective review (2007-2021) of postmastectomy patients undergoing NAC reconstruction.
Patients were categorized into surgical-only, tattoo-only, or combined surgical and tattoo groups.
Poisson regression analysis was used to assess trends in reconstruction methods.

Main Results:

Over 15 years, tattoo-only NAC reconstruction significantly increased (P < 0.0001).
Combined surgical and tattoo NAC reconstruction significantly decreased (P = 0.007).
Breast reconstruction rates overall significantly increased (P < 0.0001).

Conclusions:

A significant shift towards tattoo-only NAC reconstruction and away from surgical-only methods is evident.
Increased access to and quality of tattoo-based NAC reconstruction likely contribute to its rising popularity.
Tattoo-only reconstruction offers a less invasive option, emphasizing its role in comprehensive breast reconstruction.
