The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish layperson-based threshold scores for the detectability and acceptability of STIRs using PES/WES.
    • To compare the ability of laypeople and dentists in detecting STIRs.
    • To identify specific pink and white aesthetic deficiencies related to STIR detectability.

    Main Methods:

    • 38 calibrated photographs of anterior STIRs were evaluated using PES/WES by prosthodontists.
    • 100 laypeople and 60 dentists identified STIRs, provided reasons, and rated acceptance.

    • Laypeople tend to accept STIRs even when they are detectable, prioritizing soft tissue and white aesthetics.
    • Dentists possess a superior ability to detect STIRs compared to laypeople.
