Area of Science:
- Genomics
- Bioinformatics
- Computational Biology
Background:
- Accurate cancer classification is crucial for effective treatment strategies.
- High-dimensional genomic datasets pose challenges for identifying informative genes.
- Robust gene selection is essential for precise cancer classification.
Purpose of the Study:
- Introduce the Two-stage MI-PSA Gene Selection algorithm for enhanced cancer classification.
- Improve accuracy by selecting optimal gene subsets from complex datasets.
- Advance understanding and management of cancer through precise classification.
Main Methods:
- Integrate Mutual Information (MI) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for gene selection.
- Utilize MI as an initial filter to identify cancer-related genes.
- Employ PSO for refining gene selection to pinpoint optimal subsets.
Main Results:
- The MI-PSA algorithm achieved a best classification accuracy of 99.01% using 19 genes.
- MI-PSA significantly outperformed MI (93.44%) and SVM (91.26%) methods at the same gene count.
- Demonstrated superior average and worst-case accuracy, highlighting robustness.
Conclusions:
- The MI-PSA algorithm offers a powerful method for identifying critical genes in cancer classification.
- This approach enhances the precision of cancer classification.
- Contributes to advancing the understanding and management of cancer.
