This study developed novel zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticle-based colloidosomes for enhanced sunscreen applications. These multifunctional colloidosomes offer superior UV protection and antibacterial properties while minimizing skin damage.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Cosmetic Science
Background:
- Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are key sunscreen ingredients but prone to agglomeration, reducing efficacy and causing potential skin damage via photocatalysis.
- Agglomeration of ZnO nanoparticles negatively impacts UV absorption, antibacterial properties, and can lead to secondary skin damage from reactive oxygen species.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop stable and effective ZnO nanoparticle-based materials for improved sunscreen and cosmetic applications.
- To create multifunctional colloidosomes that enhance UV protection, possess antibacterial activity, and offer antioxidant benefits.
Main Methods:
- Uniformly dispersing ZnO nanoparticles onto latex particles to create composite shell materials.
- Utilizing high-gravity technology for the self-assembly of these composite particles into hollow colloidosomes.
- In situ encapsulation of the antioxidant anthocyanin within the colloidosomes.
Main Results:
- The developed colloidosomes exhibited significantly enhanced ultraviolet resistance compared to pure ZnO nanoparticles.
- A higher loading capacity of ZnO nanoparticles within the colloidosomes correlated with a more pronounced inhibition of Gram bacteria growth.
- Encapsulated anthocyanin achieved a 78% free radical scavenging rate at a concentration of 2 g/L.
Conclusions:
- Multifunctional colloidosomes offer a promising platform for advanced sunscreen and cosmetic formulations.
- The high-gravity self-assembly method effectively improves the application properties of ZnO nanoparticles.
- These composite colloidosomes provide a synergistic approach to UV protection, antibacterial action, and antioxidant activity.
