This study presents a novel hydrogel patch with quercetin nanocrystals for enhanced wound healing. The patch provides sustained drug release, reducing oxidative stress and promoting rapid skin repair in animal models.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Delayed wound healing is a significant clinical challenge due to unfavorable physiological conditions.
- Existing treatments for wound repair have limitations, necessitating innovative therapeutic solutions.
- Phytochemicals like quercetin show promise for wound healing but suffer from poor solubility and bioavailability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a novel hydrogel-based wound healing patch incorporating quercetin nanocrystals.
- To enhance quercetin solubility and achieve sustained drug release for improved therapeutic efficacy.
- To evaluate the in vivo efficacy of the quercetin nanocrystal hydrogel patch in promoting wound repair.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of quercetin nanocrystals with controlled size (600-800 nm).
- Fabrication of a hydrogel patch incorporating the synthesized quercetin nanocrystals.
- Assessment of sustained quercetin release from the hydrogel patch.
- Evaluation of wound healing efficacy in rat and mouse models of skin wounds.
Main Results:
- Quercetin nanocrystals were successfully synthesized, exhibiting sustained release characteristics when embedded in the hydrogel patch.
- The hydrogel patch demonstrated significant in vivo wound repair capabilities in preclinical animal models.
- The sustained release of quercetin from the patch effectively reduced oxidative stress at the wound site.
Conclusions:
- A novel therapeutic hydrogel patch containing phytochemical-based nanocrystals (quercetin) has been successfully developed.
- The developed patch facilitates sustained quercetin release, enhancing its bioactivity and therapeutic potential for wound healing.
- This innovative approach shows promise for rapid and effective wound repair applications.
