Background:

  • Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder.
  • The relationship between coffee/caffeine intake and FD remains under-investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between coffee and caffeine consumption and the odds of functional dyspepsia (FD) and its symptoms.
  • To investigate this relationship in a large sample of Iranian adults.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 3362 adults (aged 18-55 years).
  • Dietary intake assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (DS-FFQ).
  • FD and its symptoms evaluated using a modified Persian version of the Rome III questionnaire; logistic regression used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of FD was 14.5% in the study population.
  • No significant association was found between coffee consumption (OR: 1.27) or caffeine intake (OR: 1.00) and the odds of FD.
  • Coffee and caffeine intake were not significantly associated with FD symptoms like early satiation, post-prandial fullness, or epigastric pain, even when stratified by gender and BMI.

Conclusions:

  • This study found no significant association between coffee or caffeine consumption and the odds of functional dyspepsia or its symptoms in Iranian adults.
  • Further research is recommended in populations with higher coffee consumption to explore this relationship.
