Purpose of the Study:

  • A cross-sectional observational study was conducted.
  • 150 postnatal mothers in the Special Care Newborn Unit of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh, were surveyed.
  • Data were collected from July 2018 to January 2019.

Main Results:

  • 81% of mothers had average knowledge, and 96% demonstrated average practices in newborn care.
  • High knowledge levels were observed in clean cord care, exclusive breastfeeding, colostrum feeding, and immunization awareness.
  • Poor knowledge was noted regarding cord stump materials and the newborn's first bath. Practice levels were high for napkin hygiene and exclusive breastfeeding but poor for correct breastfeeding positioning and attachment.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of postnatal mothers exhibit average knowledge and practices in newborn care.
  • While proficient in some areas like cord care and breastfeeding, targeted interventions are needed to address knowledge deficits in cord stump care and infant bathing.
  • Improving breastfeeding techniques requires further attention and support for mothers.
