This scoping review identified core and advanced competencies for nephrology nurses globally. These findings support the development of standardized training and competency frameworks for nurses caring for chronic kidney disease patients.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology Nursing
- Healthcare Competencies
- Global Health
Background:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health concern.
- Nephrology nurses are crucial for delivering high-quality CKD patient care.
- Specialized nursing competencies are essential for effective CKD management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a comprehensive scoping review of global literature on nephrology nurse competencies.
- To map and synthesize existing knowledge regarding the skills of nephrology nurses worldwide.
- To identify core and advanced competencies required for nephrology nursing practice.
Main Methods:
- A scoping review methodology was employed, adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology.
- Literature searches were conducted across five databases (Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, ASSIA, CINAHL) and gray literature.
- Data extraction, quality appraisal using JBI tools, and descriptive analysis were performed by two independent reviewers.
Main Results:
- 25 articles were included from 8786 identified records, primarily position papers published between 2000 and 2022.
- Studies encompassed all continents, highlighting a global perspective on nephrology nursing.
- Identified competencies included core skills and advanced areas such as clinical practice, education, leadership, management, and research.
Conclusions:
- A diverse and comprehensive set of skills is required for nephrology nurses to manage complex CKD cases.
- Ongoing refinement and expansion of nephrology nurse competencies are necessary in national contexts.
- This review provides a foundation for defining homogeneous training pathways and competencies at national and institutional levels.
