Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Integrative Healthcare
  • Workplace Safety

Background:

  • Complementary and integrative healthcare (CIH) is a growing sector.
  • Understanding the working conditions of CIH providers is crucial for workforce well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the working conditions of acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, midwives, and naturopathic doctors.
  • To compare these conditions to conventional healthcare and non-healthcare occupations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized cross-sectional Occupational Information Network data from 2013-2021.
  • Analyzed 10 variables representing positive, ergonomic, psychosocial, and schedule demands.
  • Calculated means and 95% confidence intervals for five CIH occupations.

Main Results:

  • CIH providers reported favorable conditions, moderate psychosocial demands, and moderate work hours.
  • Massage therapists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists exhibited higher ergonomic hazards compared to midwives and managers.
  • Chiropractors reported a mean bending/twisting frequency of 3.43, significantly higher than midwives (2.17).

Conclusions:

  • CIH occupations generally offer healthy work environments.
  • Ergonomic hazards represent a notable concern for specific CIH practitioners.
  • Further research into mitigating ergonomic risks in CIH is warranted.
